Frequently Asked Questions

  • We offer hands-on small-group and private sewing classes for adults and youth, from extreme beginners to advanced sewists.

  • Getting started is simple. From the Class Menus section of our Home Page, choose a menu and look for a class that might interest you. Register for a dated class or Flex-Schedule class. Once the order is placed, you’ll receive confirmation, and if the class you chose is a Flex-Schedule option, a teacher will contact you to coordinate a date and time that works for everyone.

  • We always keep the class sizes to four or fewer at a time so you get more attention and your questions answered. For every class you take, you are encouraged to come to a Friday night Sewing Meetup to get some practice in, at no charge.

Our beginner classes come with a fabric kit, so you can keep costs down and save time. We’ve had students show up with fabric that doesn’t work, and this prevents frustration.

Our students get a 20% discount on sewing supplies if they get them before or on the day of class.

Also, we sell Janome Sewing Machines at suggested retail prices, with a warranty. The Sewing Hive will handle any repairs you may need on your machine by taking them to a certified Janome repair person, so there’s no need to worry about voiding your warranty.

  • No prior sewing experience is needed for beginner sewing classes. We welcome complete beginners and teach foundational skills such as threading a machine, basic stitches, fabric handling, reading simple patterns, and sewing terminology.

  • The best sewing class for beginners starts with basic machine skills, simple projects, and hands-on guidance. Beginner sewing students typically learn how to safely use a sewing machine, sew seams, understand fabric basics, and complete an introductory project.

Class Specific Questions

  • We offer a variety of sewing classes for different experience levels, including beginner sewing, garment sewing, pattern fitting, specialty techniques, kids sewing classes, private lessons, and project-based workshops.

  • If you are unsure which sewing class to take, contact us for guidance. We can help match you with a class based on your sewing experience, goals, and comfort level with sewing machines or patterns.

  • Yes, we offer sewing classes for kids based on age and readiness. Children learn sewing safety, machine basics, hand-eye coordination, beginner techniques, and confidence-building projects in a supportive environment.

  • ‍ ‍We start group machine classes at age 9.
There are private machine classes for one hour at a time for children who are 7-8, and may be ready, so we’ll guide them and gauge their readiness for a group class.
For ages 6 and up, we also have hand-sewing classes.

  • Yes, private sewing lessons are available for beginners through advanced sewists. Private sessions can focus on sewing machine basics, fitting, alterations, pattern reading, garment construction, or specific sewing goals.

Equipment & Supplies Questions

  • We encourage students to bring their machines so they can work on machines they are comfortable with or continue learning about them as we teach techniques.

  • Each class will require specific project-based tools. You are encouraged to bring yours, and if you don’t have a specific tool, we have them to borrow or purchase.

Beginner-level classes require the fabric kit, sold separately for tax purposes. These kits have fabric and notions you need to complete the projects. This eliminates the risk of buying the wrong item, since new sewists often don’t understand which fabrics won’t work.

  • If your sewing machine is giving you trouble, we may be able to help troubleshoot common problems. If there is something broken, you’ll be advised to have it repaired and we’ll let you borrow one of ours.

Scheduling Questions

  • Yes! Some sewing classes may be available with flexible scheduling options. If scheduled class dates do not work for you, we may be able to coordinate a date directly with an instructor.

  • Policies vary by class. Contact us as soon as possible and we’ll help explain available options.

  • In some cases, yes. Certain instructors offer classes by appointment or coordinated scheduling based on availability.
