Learn Costuming techniques to make your first Cosplay fantasy costume!! For ages 12-18

Susan O’Dell is a custom dressmaker, tailor, and costume-maker with thirty years' experience on both sides of the Atlantic. After earning a Certificate in Tailoring from the London College of Fashion she worked for three years in London as a couture seamstress making ballgowns. Susan’s work  can be seen locally in the productions  of Ballet Met (she designed the costume of the Mouse King in The Nutcracker) and the Columbus Children’s Theater.  She also works for traveling productions; she was a stitcher and dresser recently for ‘Hamilton’. Susan designs and sews dresses and tailors suits for weddings and other special occasions. Susan designed the costume above, inspired by a video game, for her daughter.  

Join us for this fun and instructive afternoon camp. Participants will enjoy fun and games while learning professional costuming skills. Learn how to translate designs into wearable costumes. Build your core sewing skills and knowledge of materials. Here is what you will learn:

Machine and Hand Sewing different types of materials, How to make a Cape, Applique a pair of Paws, Modify your shape with Sculptured padding, Copy patterns from existing clothing, Adapt “Normal” clothes into costume pieces,Basic Millinery (hat making), How to sew a Zipper into your Costume!

June 24-28, daily from noon to 5pm, ages 12-18. Partial scholarships available from IATSE, Local 747 Wardrobe Union.

What we do goes beyond sewing lessons. It’s about creating a community of individuals who are searching for better ways to express their individuality.

The Sewing Hive isn’t a fabric store; it’s a place to learn or strengthen your skills in sewing, sourcing fabrics, and pattern fitting & making. Our goal is to partner with local fabric store Sew to Speak to provide material and supplies for our classes. For students who want to shop on their own, a supply list is provided.
