Jeans in a Week

Monday-Friday, 11/30-12/4, 6-8:30 PM

Saturday, 12/5, 12-2:30

Have you always dreamed of sewing the perfect pair of jeans? Want to take your sewing skills to the next level? Join pattern designer Nat of Neighborhood Patterns for a week-long jeans-making intensive! In this class, Nat walks you through every step of sewing a custom-fitted pair of “Matchbook Jeans.”
Prerequisite: Know how to sew on a sewing machine, thread it, and troubleshoot machine issues independently. Have experience using a commercial sewing pattern.

You will gain skills to

  • Make custom adjustments (for the rise and inseam) to a pants pattern

  • Sew a pair of jeans that stand the test of time

  • Sew a J-pocket

  • Sew a zipper fly

  • Jean-specific topstitching

  • Make a structured waistband

Class prep:

  • Email Nat here with your height, waist, and hip circumference measurements. Nat will help you to select your size and recommend any needed adjustments

  • Pick up your supply kit from the Sewing Hive (this will include your pattern and tracing paper)

  • Trace out your size. - Nat will provide your patterns as part of the required kit.

    • We will make adjustments on the first night of class. For now, just trace your selected size!

  • Prewash fabric (Wash, dry, and iron) - denim shrinks a ton. Wash and dry 2x to be extra safe!

Materials details:

  • 10oz or heavier (non-stretch) denim: review the size chart for your specific size and required yardage.  The Sewing Hive has a limited quantity on hand for students at $14.99 a yard.

    • Please do not purchase denim with stretch or anything lighter than 10 oz, as it will affect the fit of your final garment

  • Pocket bag fabric: 1/2 yard Lightweight cotton (quilting cotton works great here)

Students will also need to bring the following supplies:

  • Sewing machine

  • Serger (optional; there is one shop serger available for use)

  • Marking tool of your preference

  • Rotary cutter OR sewing scissors

  • snips/sewing scissors

  • Denim sewing machine needles (16 or heavier)

  • Pins

  • Thread and bobbin in matching color to denim

    Happening:

    Monday-Friday, 11/30-12/4, 6-8:30 PM

    Saturday, 12/5, 12-2:30

    Cost: $260 + $12 (supply fee) = $272
