Victorian Boned Bustle

2/21/2027 10 AM - 5 PM, ages 18 and up (15 and up with participating adult). 

Sewing level Intermediate: student should be able to thread their machine and sew precise straight and curved lines without assistance using regular and zipper feet, and understand the basic concepts of cutting out and using a sewing pattern.  

$160 per person, minimum 2 students, maximum 6 students. Kit available for an additional $200, but must be ordered by 2/7/27. Class will be canceled if there are not 2 registrations by 6 PM on 2/7/27.

Essential for creating the bustle fashions of the 1870s and 1880s, the "tournure" or bustle, holds your skirts out into the fashionable shape without resorting to heavy crinolines or padded pillows. Learn to install hoop bones, casings, and grommets, pick up some tips and tricks for perfect ruffles, and you will go home with a ready-to-wear tournure bustle of your very own. Choose between 1870s or 1880s style.

-Fabric (cotton twill, sateen, canvas, or cotton duck) - Follow pattern for yardage requirements (view C or D) plus 2 yards for ruffles (optional but highly recommended - use quilting cotton for this if using canvas or duck for the base fabric)

-Wide single fold bias tape to match or contrast with your fabric (follow pattern for yardage)

-7.5 mm wide steel boning, Hoop Steel or Hoop Wire (follow pattern for yardage) - https://corsetmaking.com/hoop-bone-steel-75mm-x-65mm.html

-2 yards of 1" wide grosgrain or petersham ribbon

-1" buckle (metal with pointed prongs is best)

-18 plastic or metal ends for hoops 

-3 yards corset lacing, 1/4" ribbon or 2 54" long boot laces

-36 2-part grommets or eyelets (size 00 recommended)

-2 10.5" long 1/4" bones, 

-For 1870s: 2 14" long 1/4" wide bones

NOT included in kit:

-Setting tool for grommets/eyelets

-Rubber or Resin Mallet

-Tapered awl or fabric punch to match grommet size

-Sewing Machine with Zigzag Foot, Zipper foot and bobbins

-Sewing machine needles (size 14 suggested)

-All-purpose (NOT embroidery) Thread that matches your fabric and your bias tape

-Hand sewing kit (needles, pins, scissors, etc)

-Ruler (clear quilting rulers work best)

-Marking pencil for fabric

-Fabric Scissors

Bolt cutters or tin snips

Metal file

6 yards extra-wide double-fold bias tape or quilt binding to match or contrast with your fabric
