Sew Your Own Underwear

from $45.00

Learn to sew underwear for women with a variety of patterns available to choose from.

Time for some self-care, ladies! Martha will instruct and walk you through sewing underwear that’s comfortable, fun, and way less expensive than store-bought!
This is a wonderful scrapbuster, too.

BRING TO CLASS:

1. Your sewing machine (or rent one of ours for $10)

2. Matching color of polyester all-purpose thread

3. Your pattern choice from this list:

The Megan Nielsen Acacia Panty (hip-hugger)
The Rebecca Page basic underwear
Whisper Boyshorts from Sinclair Patterns
Dune Tank and Briefs by Christine Haynes

4. Quantity and type of fabric, such as 100% cotton or percentage of cotton/spandex blend and elastics, you will need per your choice of pattern’s supply list and specific size you’ll be creating.
FYI: Fold-over-elastic in 5/8”-1” width, OR Lingerie elastic in 3/8” width, OR 1/8 yard of cotton/blend jersey with at least 5% spandex to bind leg/waistband opening.
A scrap of cotton for the crotch lining.  (Old T-shirts are great for this)

5. Straight pins

6. Scissors (and rotary cutter optional)

7. Ballpoint sewing machine needle: 80/12 size for medium-weight fabric

IMPORTANT TO NOTE:
The pattern size may differ from ready-to-wear but will be based on your full-hip measurement.
Jersey with a cotton-Lycra/Spandex blend is best if you are a beginner.
If you choose the Noelle pattern, you will NOT need a piece of lining fabric.  We will make the panties as a single layer except for the cotton crotch lining).
A walking foot is nice if you have one.

YOU WILL GAIN THESE SKILLS:
How to choose a size in the pattern of your choice
Use the “burrito” method to sew fully enclosed seams for the panty liner.
How to create the waist and leg openings using elastics like “lingerie,” “fold-over,” and/or jersey fabric with lycra/spandex for the waist and leg openings. The techniques can be combined in a single panty, e.g., elastic for the waist and stretch jersey for the leg openings.

Appropriate for teens and adults with the following skills required:
The student should be a confident beginner with mastery of their sewing machine (e.g., how to load a bobbin, how to install their zipper foot, how to change a needle). Prior experience sewing with knits is preferred but not required.

2 1/2 hours of instruction
Scheduled and Semi-Private is $45 with a maximum of two students,
Private is $80 for a ONE-ON-ONE class with just the instructor and you
